The general outline of the story is well-known. Dr Albert M. Byrne grew up in Los Altos Hills together with his sister Betty, and together they inherited the estate left by their father Col. Bernard Albert Byrne.

Dr Albert Byrne went tp Spain to fight in the civil war which took place between 1936 and 1939 between the Republicans and the Nationalists. On his return to The States, he was found to have contracted Tuberculosis, and was advised to live in a dry climate to benefit his lungs. Accordingly he moved to Arizona and donated the land he had inherited to an organization known as "The Nature Conservancy" based in Washington D.C.

The ownership transition all happened around between 1965 and 1967, about a decade after the incorporation of The Town of Los Altos Hills which had occurred in 1956.

This parcel of land was approximately 55 acres, and while Nature Conservancy gratefully accepted this gift, it did not fit the profile of the lands owned and being protected by that organization as contemplated in their mission - it was smaller than their typical holdings and did not harbor any unusual or endangered flora or fauna.

This property was seen more as a distraction from Nature Conservancy's promary mission, so when theTown of Los Altos Hills was incorporated in 1965 and was planning to acquire or set aside some open spaces and parks, this was seen as a mutually beneficial opportunity to transfer (i.e. sell) the property to the Town. Because the property was encumbered by deed restrictions that precluded it from being developed in any way, it's monetary value on the open market was limited, and a price that was acceptable to both parties (and afforfable by the newly established town) was soon negotiated.

Following are some documents which were retrieved from the archives and which document the various agreements. From the number of documents involved, the transaction appears to have been more involved than just a single transfer, and somehow Dr Byrn's sister Betty (whose had since become Countess Betty De Zahara through marriage to a Spanish Marquesa and lived on an Estate in Ireland) was also involved in transferring some land - although exact details have not been figured out so far.
